If you live in central Virginia and your health insurance coverage for 2018 is through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance exchange market, under the insurance plan Cigna Connect, then you will not have insurance coverage for services provided by Bon Secours.
Bon Secours remains actively engaged with Cigna in the commercial insurance marketplace, and accepts all commercial Cigna plans but is excluded from their ACA individual exchange narrow network plan. The commercial insurance participation with Cigna currently represents the majority of Cigna’s covered lives in the Richmond market. Learn about our ACA marketplace partnership for 2019 with Virginia Premier and VCU.
Why is Bon Secours Out of Network for the ACA Cigna Connect Insurance Plan?
Bon Secours has been working diligently to reverse the Cigna decision about excluding Bon Secours, and has repeatedly requested to be able to continue to service our patient’s needs. Cigna has confirmed they will not reverse that position for the 2018 coverage year. The Cigna contract excludes Bon Secours and requires patients to utilize either HCA or VCU, and their aligned physician networks.
What if I am receiving ongoing care at Bon Secours and I have Cigna Connect coverage for 2018?
Bon Secours is working with Cigna, HCA and VCU to develop a transition plan for Aetna Leap individual exchange members to cover the following circumstances:
a. Patients in-house on 12/31/17
b. Oncology patients in mid treatment
c. Pregnancy cases in the third trimester
d. Patients presenting in the Emergency Department that need to be admitted to inpatient care yet are not stable enough for transfer to an in-network provider
Additional details will be provided as soon as they are available.
Is there any way I can continue to receive care at Bon Secours if I have Cigna Connect coverage for 2018?
Individual exchange patients living in the Richmond metro market who come to Bon Secours’ for care from January 1, 2018 to Dec. 31, 2018 will not have insurance coverage for our services. In order to maintain any insurance coverage they need to enroll with Cigna Connect and, unfortunately, there are no options available to continue to use Bon Secours physicians or facilities.
How will I be notified if this impacts me?
Three of the four insurance plans in the ACA exchange in 2017 - Aetna, United and Anthem - will not be available in 2018. This impacts plan participants in the city of Richmond and the counties of Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield. Notification letters were sent by those insurance plans in September and Cigna has also contacted individual exchange members to welcome them to apply for Cigna coverage during open enrollment, which is Nov. 1 through Dec. 15, 2017.
What are my options for 2019 if have coverage through the ACA Health Insurance Exchange?
Bon Secours is partnering with Virginia Premier and VCU to offer coverage in 2019.
